[0:00] Here you have Jesus talking about
[0:01] building his church on a rock and that
[0:03] the gates of Hades would not prevail
[0:05] against it. So now you've got this
[0:07] combination of what the apostles are
[0:09] understanding because when Jesus says
[0:11] this, he continues a little bit further.
[0:14] Because some will just say, "Well, Peter
[0:15] was just one of the other apostles." And
[0:17] he was, he was one of the 12. And that
[0:19] there was nothing special about him.
[0:23] What the Catholic Church teaches is is
[0:24] that the Pope is the successor of Peter,
[0:27] the head of the church,
[0:29] and the universal shepherd
[0:31] of Christ's church.
[0:33] This is important. Why? Because the Pope
[0:35] acts with authority,
[0:37] the authority of Christ on matters of
[0:39] faith and morals.
[0:40] The word Pope, anybody know where that
[0:42] comes from?
[0:45] From the Italian word papa. And what
[0:47] does papa mean?
[0:48] Father, right? That's why we call him
[0:50] the Holy Father. So, the word Pope
[0:53] literally is a word that means father.
[0:56] Okay, we're That's going to be important
[0:58] here in just a second.
[0:59] So, let's take a little bit deeper in
[1:01] this concept that Peter, and by his
[1:03] extension, his successors, are the head
[1:06] of the church, and that he's to be a
[1:08] father figure of the church. We go back
[1:10] to Matthew 16:18.
[1:12] Where Peter Where Jesus says, "You are
[1:13] Peter upon this rock I will build my
[1:15] church and the gates of Hades shall not
[1:17] prevail against it."
[1:18] The next part, very important.
[1:21] "I will give you" and this is very
[1:24] specific, he is talking to Peter
[1:25] specifically.
[1:27] "I will give you" Now, in English, you
[1:30] can have singular or plural
[1:33] uh plural sense. I can say, "You need to
[1:36] move closer."
[1:38] Or I can say, "You need to move closer."
[1:41] Or in Texas, we would say, "Y'all."
[1:43] Right?
[1:44] And you. Where What Jesus is saying here
[1:47] is specifically you, Peter, not all
[1:49] y'all.
